Beyond Birmingham

Verizon's list stops at one city, but its FCC filing does not. By county, its reported share is highest in Houston, Madison, Lee, Jefferson, Limestone and Montgomery counties, each with at least 50,000 homes.

The share drops fast in smaller rural counties. Verizon reports service at under a quarter of units in 21 of the state's counties, including Sumter and Covington. In some of them, fiber from other companies is common. In Covington, fiber from any provider reaches 87.9% of homes in the dated filing. 1. L1: ZIP estimate. A ZIP code covers many streets. We do not publish ZIP pages.
  2. L2: FCC-reported (used on this page). Providers report the technology at each location to the FCC National Broadband Map.
  3. L3: Provider-coverage (used on this page). Verizon names the place on its own locations page (shown as "Listed by Verizon").
  4. L4: Provider-confirmed address. Only the address check reaches this level. It returns the offer for your street address and unit.
  5. L5: User-confirmed orderable. We never claim this level. You confirm it when you place the order.

Deciding in Alabama

Alabama leans on wireless more than most states on Verizon's 5G Home list. 8.6% of homes pay for satellite, the highest share of the 25 states on that list, and 14.4% get by on a cellular data plan alone, the second highest. If yours is one of those satellite homes, read what moving off satellite internet involves.

DSL is still reported at 48% of the state's homes. A service of at least 100 megabits down and 20 up reaches 90.8%, the lowest of the 25. If you are weighing 5G Home against one of those DSL lines or against cable, read whether 5G home internet can replace cable.

What wired service is reported in Birmingham besides Verizon?
