Can 5G home internet replace cable?

5G home internet is a fixed service using a cellular radio link. It can add a useful option where the wired market is limited, but signal and sector load make a particular home's experience hard to predict from a national ad.
Match the connection to the job
A household that browses, streams and has modest upload needs may find a qualified 5G offer adequate. A household with work calls all day, cloud backups, latency-sensitive games or weak indoor signal needs a more careful trial. Measure at the actual gateway location, not from a phone at the front door.
A cable line can also have congestion or weak upload. Compare current wired busy-hour download, upload, latency and packet loss with the 5G trial. If the 5G offer is genuinely better at the hours that matter and its data terms fit, switching is reasonable. Do not assume any wireless product has the same limits as a different provider's plan.
- Check that the specific 5G home product is eligible at the street address.
- Place its gateway where the provider instructs and test morning, evening and work hours.
- Test calls, VPN, gaming and upload—not just a one-time download result.

Compare complete cost and keep a fallback
Record monthly service after any bundled mobile discount, equipment, taxes, data limits or network-management terms. Fixed wireless may be easy to self-install, but even self-install equipment can need a return if the test fails. Keep cable active while trialing the new connection if the terms and your budget allow.
If the 5G trial varies sharply at busy hours, an advertised peak speed is not a cure. You may keep cable as the primary line, use wireless as backup if that cost is justified, or fix the home Wi-Fi if both technologies perform well at their gateways but poorly in one room.

A coverage map answers a different question from ‘will this gateway work in my house at 8 p.m.?’ Test the gateway at the allowed locations, usually near a suitable window, and make a record over multiple busy periods. Include download, upload, latency variation and the specific apps that matter: a work VPN, video call, gaming session, or security camera. Repeat the same tasks over the existing cable service. Keep other devices and time of day as similar as possible so the comparison is meaningful.
Do not compare a phone's 5G icon outdoors with a cable Ethernet test indoors. Phones and home gateways can have different radios, plans, placement and network policy. An unlimited headline also needs its own data and congestion terms. If the wireless trial is strong at noon but weak every evening, the evening result should drive a household that works or streams then. If the only weak result is a distant Wi-Fi room, check that local path before rejecting either service.

Plan the exit around the trial terms
Before activating a second line, read the trial or return window, gateway-return condition, and the first billing date. Mark the last safe return date on a calendar. If a wireless product needs a specific qualifying mobile line for its advertised price, calculate the bill with and without that line. Ask whether moving the gateway to another address requires a new qualification. A portable-looking box does not imply permission to use the plan anywhere.
Keep cable active long enough to exercise the wireless connection during the hours that reveal problems, when the terms and household budget allow. If the test fails, return the equipment within its documented window and preserve the receipt. If it succeeds, cancel cable for an agreed effective date and verify the final bill. A positive wireless test may also make a useful backup, but paying for two full connections should reflect the actual value of continuity.
Worked case (hypothetical): Hypothetical: 5G is $15/month cheaper but requires an existing mobile bundle worth $10/month to the household. The true incremental saving is $5/month if that line would otherwise be cancelled. A $60 switching cost then takes 12 months to recover, before accounting for any busy-hour performance difference.
