How much download and upload speed does your household need?
To size your household’s internet speed, add up only what runs at the same time in your busiest hour, then compare download and upload separately. Published figures are modest: Netflix lists 15 Mbps for 4K, and Microsoft recommends 2.5 Mbps up for a Teams video meeting (checked Sep 24, 2026). Compare a wired speed test with Wi-Fi near the problem device; check router placement, signal, congestion and device limits. Calls and gaming also depend on latency, jitter and packet loss, which this bandwidth model cannot calculate.
Published inputs and our assumptions
The calculator’s inputs come from specific video services. Other apps, picture settings and devices may differ. We add only the activities you say happen at the same time. Then we apply the headroom you choose and round each target up to the next 5 Mbps.

How to use the result
- Compare the download target with a wired speed test at the router. If the wired test already beats it but rooms still stall, the limit is Wi-Fi; see why your Wi-Fi is slow.
- Compare the upload target on its own. Work calls and backups depend on it, and internet for a home office explains what calls need.
- Keep latency separate. Cloud gaming needs low delay as well as bandwidth; internet for cloud gaming covers both.
- Put the range in context. The FCC’s broadband benchmark is 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up, set on Mar 14, 2024. A plan far above your result needs a reason, such as large transfers; gigabit versus multi-gig tests that reason.
- Turn hours into monthly data if your plan has a cap, using internet data caps. When the range is clear, check plans at your address.
Common questions
- How much internet speed does one 4K stream need?
- Netflix recommends 15 Mbps or more for one 4K UHD stream, and YouTube lists 20 Mbps for 4K (both checked Sep 24, 2026). Count a stream only if it plays at the same time as the others, then test Wi-Fi in the room where you watch.
- How much upload speed does a video call need?
- Microsoft recommends 2.5 Mbps up and 4 Mbps down for each person in a Teams video meeting (checked Sep 24, 2026). At that rate, two people on calls at the same time use about 5 Mbps of upload together, so compare that total with the upload speed on the plan’s broadband label.
- Is 100/20 Mbps enough internet for a family?
- 100/20 Mbps is the FCC’s benchmark for high-speed fixed broadband, set on Mar 14, 2024, so it is a yardstick rather than an answer for one family. Whether it fits depends on what runs at once: add the busiest hour’s streams and calls in the calculator above, then compare upload on its own.
