How to switch internet providers without losing service
Order and test the new line before you cancel the old one. Weigh a few days of overlap against a workday offline.

To switch internet providers without downtime, order and test the new service before canceling the old. AT&T says a fiber install typically takes four to six hours, and Optimum says a cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period, except in Connecticut and New Jersey (checked Sep 24, 2026). Cancel once the new line passes your tests.
The cutover gates
A switch goes in four gates. Pass each one before you move to the next. If a gate fails, the old line keeps running.

Before you place the new order
Use the full street address and apartment or suite number. Ask whether the job needs a technician, a new line, landlord permission or access to a utility room. Save the plan’s broadband label, which must list prices, fees, data allowances and introductory-rate details. Keep the order number and the expected activation date.
Your situation changes the plan:
- Staying in the same home: leave the old line active until the new one passes a real-use test.
- Renting: get installation permission and building access in writing before the installer arrives.

How long installation and cancellation take
Provider rules set the length of the overlap. These are the ones we could source:

For any other provider, ask two questions in writing: when does a cancellation take effect, and how is a partial month billed?
Test what the household uses
After the install, run a wired device if you can. Check Wi-Fi in the hardest rooms. Hold a video call and watch the upload. Try any work VPN or smart-home device. Our home office guide lists what remote work needs.
Allow at least one ordinary workday and one busy evening. If the install fails or the unit cannot be served, keep the old line. Ask for a new appointment, or the cancellation terms for the order that never activated.
Return equipment with proof
Rented equipment has to go back, and you need proof that it did. Xfinity lists three return routes, and each leaves proof: its Digital Return Center, which works even after you disconnect; an Xfinity store, where you keep the receipt; or a prepaid UPS label, whose tracking stub is your receipt (checked Sep 24, 2026).
Ask any other provider for its return route in writing. List each rented device by serial number. Photograph the receipt, then check that the account shows the device as received. A final invoice can arrive after you return the router, so keep your records until it does.
Handle the awkward branches
If the installer cannot finish the drop, ask whether the order stays open, whether any fee applies, and what work comes before the next visit. Do not cancel the old line because a visit was marked complete. If the new line works by Ethernet but Wi-Fi fails in the office, fix the home network before you call the switch done.
After cancellation, check the final invoice against the date you asked for. Keep the first new bill beside the order summary, and compare the discount, activation and equipment lines first.

Can I keep Xfinity running while I move to NOW Internet?

Test the NOW connection at home before you confirm that the old account is closed.
