Should you keep Spectrum or switch? A worksheet for your address
Spectrum lists no caps or contracts, so the decision turns on your bill after the promotion and on upload.

The disclosure still used the Premier name on Sep 21. The plans page, checked Sep 24, lists its 500 Mbps tier as Internet 500. Use the name printed on your own label. In our Sep 21 audit, the sampled page named no month-13 rate for Internet 500, so ask what your bill becomes after the first year.
Name the reason to leave
If the bill rose, find the expired credit and any equipment or Wi-Fi charge; our guide to a bill that went up walks through the invoice. If video calls fail, compare an Ethernet test with Wi-Fi in the problem room. Measure upload at the hours you work, and write the rate your work needs beside Spectrum’s listed upload, so every rival offer is judged against the same number. If the problem is outages, log the dates and each support ticket.

Is fiber an option at your address?
If you need more upload than a cable tier gives, the alternative to check is fiber. Charter, which runs Spectrum, reports fixed service at 31.4% of US residential locations. For a Spectrum address, Check plans at your address. Across all providers, fiber is reported at 55.9% of residential locations, and at 1,000/100 Mbps or faster at 50.1% (FCC-reported on the National Broadband Map, data as of Dec 31, 2025).
Those shares cannot tell you whether a fiber line reaches your building. Check the address, then ask whether fiber runs all the way to the home. Read what fiber, cable and 5G change for upload in particular.
If a fiber provider lists your address, ask three things before you plan the switch: whether the line reaches your unit today or needs construction first, how soon the earliest install date is, and what upload the tier’s broadband label lists. Set that upload figure beside Spectrum’s listed 20 Mbps on its 500 Mbps tier and 35 Mbps on Gig. Those two Spectrum tiers are compared in Spectrum Premier or Gig.
Compare a confirmed alternative
Fixed wireless can install fast, but its signal varies by address and hour. Compare the exact labels, equipment, data terms and 24-month cost, and do not infer the technology from a phrase in an ad.
Upload is set by the tier Spectrum sells, not by the cable standard. CableLabs lists DOCSIS 3.1 at 10 Gbps down and 1 to 2 Gbps up, far above the 20 or 35 up on Spectrum’s tiers. Price the exit and protect the working line
With no contract, the exit costs sit in bundled services and rented equipment, which can carry their own terms. Ask Spectrum for the cancellation date, how the final bill is handled, and how to return each device. Keep a copy of the replacement order.
Before you book the disconnect, list every device with a Spectrum label: the modem, the router if Spectrum supplied it, and any TV receivers. Ask whether each goes back to a store or by mail, and keep the return receipt with the serial numbers until the final bill shows no equipment charge.
If neither the upload time nor the total changes enough to matter, keep Spectrum. Otherwise, write down in one sentence what the switch must fix, such as “my 9 a.m. upload no longer interrupts calls,” and test it before you disconnect Spectrum. So a decision to leave Spectrum usually turns on the price after a promotion, upload speed or reliability, not on usage limits or an early-exit fee.
Why is my Spectrum upload slow?
Spectrum upload is set by the tier you buy. Spectrum’s broadband disclosure lists 20 Mbps up on its 500 Mbps tier and 35 Mbps on Gig (checked Sep 21, 2026). That sits well below the 1 to 2 Gbps upstream that CableLabs lists for the DOCSIS 3.1 cable specification, although deployed networks vary from the specification.
